Prior to me working in the optometric field I was an administrator assistant and event coordinator for many years. I loved what I did it was like I could do everything with my eyes closed but one day I realized it was getting too easy and I love tackling challenges and learning new things. so I saw an optometrist office hiring and that’s when I knew that this would be a great opportunity for me to expand my learning skills in a field I have no knowledge and experience in! Here I am 2 ½ years later from starting at the front desk and pre-testing to being an ophthalmic technician!

What do you enjoy about optometry?

Optometry covers all areas! The complexity of the medical and insurance field and the simplistic and creative nature of styling people with frames that best fit who they are. This field never gets boring. Either new science is being developed or new brands and styles are being released. Also, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some amazing doctors and their staff that have all played a part in guiding and teaching me in this field.  This job is rewarding as I get to help and serve people with their optometry needs. What I love the most is assisting people choose frames that make them feel confident and using my administrative skills to help grow the office.

What do you enjoy in your current job?

Working in this office has challenged me to continue education in the Optometric field. The doctors have encouraged me to move forward with certification for an Optician license. I think working with doctors who see potential in their staff and then encourage them to be the best they can be and never settle is humbling and appreciated.

Where did you go for your High school? College?

Birmingham High School, Lake Balboa

I’m in school pursuing a Business Law degree as well as studying for the ABO optician test.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy hiking, running, going to the beach, snorkeling, paddle boarding, zip lining and going to the shooting range! Mostly I like taking mini solo vacations to the spa at the Glen Yvy!

What movie or genre do you enjoy watching?

I enjoy good action movies, The Bourne Identity movies to be exact!

What food do you like?

Honestly, I enjoy all food. But most recently, especially after falling ill, I’ve taken control back of my health through healthy nutrition. It’s been a really rewarding and fun journey. I’ve come to love new foods that I didn’t know that I love. Especially vegetables and leaner options of protein. It’s satisfying to nourish my body in a way that gives me better health and more energy so that I can better live my life and serve others.

My next vacation will be visiting Montana!

How has this world pandemic affected you, how have you been coping and live with it?

The pandemic affected everybody one way or another.  For me personally, I got COVID three times. Each time brought different difficulties. My Faith has always been in Jesus, so I’ve never been scared of COVID but I have felt helpless at times in helping others through it. The pandemic resulted in isolation for people causing so much destruction with families and even mental health. I knew I needed to find a way to help… I started working at a Hospice Home that served patients with COVID. This was the hardest and most rewarding job I’ve ever had. I had the opportunity to be with people when they took their final breaths but not until after we got to share some stories and laughter. That’s how I coped with it – I stayed busy and served people who needed my help.
